When sixteen-year-old Sally is evacuated to the English south coast, she is terrified by what lies ahead of her. All she knows are the sights and sounds of London's East End - but Sally swallows her tears as they leave the familiar landmarks behind, knowing that she has to be a Grown-Up Girl and play mother to her six-year-old brother Ernie. Playing mother is nothing new for Sally - their real mother Florrie, a good-time girl, hasn't even come to the station to wave them off and Ernie, crippled at an early age by polio, is used to depending on his older sister.

When they arrive in Cliffehaven, they're taken to live at the Beach View Boarding House where they're welcomed by the open-hearted Reilly family headed up by warm, loving Peggy, and life begins to improve. Sally gets a job in a uniforms factory to help pay her way - and to pay for Ernie's expensive medicines - but then Florrie arrives in Cliffehaven, bringing disaster with her. And Sally is forced to work out where her true loyalties lie....

I was a little unsure about buying this book as there was only one review on the Amazon page but I love stories set in England during WWII so I went ahead and bought it - and I was in for a wonderful read! The characters are loveable, and the crafting and writing of the book excellent, with many details that seem very authentic and well researched. Every scene seems to be put together thoughtfully and I think every idea/issue/setup is wrapped up nicely in the end. However, while everything comes together in the end, the story and characters go on, and I went right ahead and purchased the second book in the series, looking forward to another cozy read.

To me, another plus for this book is that it deals not only with romance but with family relationships and the feelings and roles of parents/caregivers, and I think it does it very well.

Some of the characters are a little "black and white" but the other aspects of this book easily makes up for that.

but it was still enjoyable. I read a lot of Lilian Harry's WWII novels and love the history behind her books. It makes me appreciate what the people of that generation went through in England during the war, but this novel didn't do that for me. I didn't get a feel for how severe the rationing was, or how horrifying the bombings were. This book focused more on the drama in the Reilly family and Sally and Ernie's life. Don't get me wrong, it was a good book, but I guess I was looking for something a little more historical.
I really liked this book. The characters were strong, with each having a personality that sprung from the pages. It does need a copy editor, as there were quite a few grammatical errors. But that aside, it was a good story. It ended a bit abruptly, but all's well that ends well. I would love to continue reading the Cliffehaven series, but they cost too much, and they aren't available at the library.
The setting is WW II and two children Sally & Ernie. They come from the London area where they have lived in a home where they have been without good parents and life in very meager circumstance. They are among many children who are relocated to a small town where they are assigned to live with a family who is willing to give them love while helping take care of Ernie who needs constant care with Polio like symptoms requiring massage to his lower limbs. Soon their town is subjected to air raids and some of the men go to Dunkirk to rescue British Soldiers who are in danger of massacre from Nazi soldiers who have them pinned to the beach. As time passes Sally falls in love with a young man who first met her when he covered her with his body during an air raid. John Hicks, the young man she loves deeply is badly insured when the boat he was on to rescue soldiers from Dunkirk. John turns from her because he feels in his injured state he has nothing to offer. From there the story has many twists and turns as Sally & John triy to find each other in the midst of his despair. These snippets of this excellent novel represent a small snippet of the twists and turns keeping the reader on the edge while learning how Sally, Ernie, John & her wonderful stand in parents help all of them as they learn to love each other while finding a way to go forward during the difficult days of WW II. The reader choosing this book will not be disappointed as they follow people who struggle to find each other and to find a way forward while facing difficulties most of us can only imagine.
This book introduces you to the main characters of the series and makes you fall in love with them and there efforts to survive during the war, while helping others do so, too. You feel you are part of the inner circle, living through what they are experiencing with them. She builds the characters personalities, their backgrounds, and their individual ways of coping in a way that makes you really get to know them. I didn’t hesitate to purchase the next book. Very easy, intertaining read. I, also, am learning another aspect of WWII history.
**London is being bombed. Children are being evacuated to safety in the country side. Ernie who has had polio and his sister Sally are one of many leaving the troubled city. Sally has had the care of her brother since she was 10. At sixteen, she has been working in a factory for several years. This fact alone is eye opening. As the story evolves, Sally discovers her own strengths within the Reilly family. Peggy Reilly is the heart of the family. She fights and loves strongly. Taking Sally and Ernie into her home, she gives them love and security even though preparations are being made to deal with bombings, rationing and knowing loved ones are in danger.
**This is the first of the Beach View Boarding House books, and is a new vision of WW2. You will get caught up with the lives of all in the family and will then need to read the rest of the books in the series.
I've gotten very picky about the fiction I like lately. I'm so sorry Maeve Binchy died. I wish Rosamunde Pilcher would write some more. I haven't been able to find any other authors like them that I've enjoyed until I read this first one of the Beach View Boarding House series. I just really enjoyed it. She seems to create the time perfectly-early WW11. Her characters are believable and sympathetic. Her plot is somewhat predictable, but she puts enough twists in that it kept my interest.

Now I'm going to order the second in the series.
I just finished reading this. I enjoyed the beginning, I didn't know about this part of history with children being relocated. Then from the middle to the end I just kept waiting for something to happen. The end was typical, but what was the point? Lots of unnecessary information and none of it very interesting. Don't care enough about the characters to read the rest of the series.
